Where to stay in Cancun: Best areas and hotels

Cancun is the most popular tourist destination in Mexico. And here you will find a huge hotel infrastructure for all budgets.

Although it can become a bit overwhelming, especially if you travel in high season.

If you are thinking of traveling to the Riviera Maya , Cancun … or some other destination in Quintana Roo, in this post I will tell you where to stay in Cancun; Best areas and hotels. And also at the end I leave you the link of recommendations to stay in other areas of the Quintana Roo peninsula .

1. Hotel zone, the most practical and safe area to stay in Cancun

The hotel zone is a large area built exclusively for tourists. Here are many of the resorts and hotels, beaches, restaurants, shops … everything to satisfy the traveler.

Although the beaches of Cancun are not as beautiful and quiet as the Riviera Maya, if your intention is to stay in Cancun you will also find beautiful beaches, especially in the hotel zone.

Regarding security, it is  the safest area to sleep in Cancun . Due to the large presence of tourists, there is a lot of security and altercations rarely occur , apart from clubs or nightlife.

Of course, in this area forget about living the authentic Mexico. Here everything is artificial and get the idea that you are in a great modern resort.

It is a large resort on the beach with beautiful pools. It is not exactly cheap, but since we had been doing a road trip through different places in the Yucatan Peninsula and Quintana Roo, the stop in Cancun was the opportunity to treat ourselves and relax for a few days. Also, we hadn’t booked a hotel, we were doing everything on the fly and when we got to Cancun there were hardly any cheap hotels left, so here we stayed.

Tip: If your intention is to stay in one of the cheaper hotels. reserve with time. As the date approaches, availability runs out and the last rooms are always at a much higher price.

2. Punta Cancun, the party zone

Punta Cancun is located within the hotel zone. And it is the part of the hotel zone preferred by partygoers. On a night that we approached we saw several clubs and places to go out for a drink. Some of the most popular clubs are Coco Bongo or the Hard Rock. Unfortunately, this is also where the biggest altercations take place, and especially related to drugs.

If you are thinking of traveling to Cancun with friends or as a couple, you may find this area attractive. Just stay away from altercations or troublesome situations.

Punta Cancun is located within the hotel zone.

3. Downton Cancun

If you are looking for an economical option but one that is great in terms of accommodation, Downtown is the best option.

In the downtown of the city is where local life takes place.

If you are looking for a beach vacation and have this advantage as soon as you leave the hotel, this area is not for you. But if your intention is to use the hotel as a base and spend the day walking around, doing excursions… it is a very good area to spend little and enjoy the area.

Downtown already breathes the local essence. Here you will find markets, shops, restaurants… managed and directed by local people.

You can find 3 and 4 star hotels from 35 euros/room night. Double.
